The Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), Lansburgh Theater, Inc. (LTI), and all other parties to the litigation over the occupancy of the Lansburgh Theatre in Washington, D.C., have settled the disputes, and STC will remain in the historic building in Washington, D.C.'s Penn Quarter under a new long-term lease.
According to the terms of the settlement, STC will occupy the space under successive 20-year leases as long as STC meets certain conditions and is properly maintaining the premises.
STC and LTI have restructured their relationship, which was established more than 20 years ago, to emphasize their common interests, to ensure the theater's future as a high quality venue for the performing arts, and to foster STC's ability to continue to bring vibrant productions to the District of Columbia.
“This landmark resolution ensures that the Penn Quarter area stays vibrant and that STC will remain a contributor to that vitality,” Michael R. Klein, the chair of the Board of Trustees of the Shakespeare Theatre Company, said in a press release. “The Shakespeare Theatre Company was one of the first organizations to help revitalize the neighborhood when the Lansburgh Theatre opened in 1992, and this agreement cements STC's rightful place as a leading cultural institution in Washington, D.C.”
STC's mainstage production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, directed by Jonathan Munby, is playing in the Lansburgh Theatre now through Oct. 27.
