The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21, will take up the proposal to build an environmentally low-impact permanent stage at the Independent Shakespeare Company's Old Zoo venue in Griffiths Park. The meeting will be at 10 a.m. in City Hall.
The Cultural Heritage Commission will be considering the design and public benefit of the project. "It is critical that the Commission hear from the public," a newsletter notice from Independent Shakespeare says, so the company is urging patrons to attend the meeting.
In addition to the new stage, the path up to the site will be made easier to navigate, making the plays much more accessible to all audience members in the summer and the site easier to get to for anyone using the Old Zoo area to picnic throughout the year. Path lighting is also part of the plan, so that the trip back to the car park will be more pleasant and safe.
The company says the new stage will make a positive difference in the artistry of the productions, as well as making it easier and more enjoyable to attend a performance of the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival.
This project will be funded through Proposition K funds, voter-approved funding source specifically earmarked for building in and maintaining City Parks.
