Romeo and Juliet Puppets Play at Elsinore

Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, the historical setting for William Shakespeare's Hamlet, will host a puppet show of Romeo and Juliet this summer.

Finn Rye, actor and mimic, known from the classic Danish children's musical “Folk og røvere i Kardemomme By,” brings Shakespeare's love drama to life with puppets, music, mimicry, and sound. The actor puts on his gardening gloves and goes out into the garden with his co-actors: puppets made from garden tools. Shovels, hoes, rakes, spades and brushes come alive in Rye's hands, and while they fertilize, water and work the garden together they make the story sprout up, too. With Frederik Lundin's magical universe of sound the tale about Romeo and Juliet unfolds without any dialogue at all.

The 30-minute performance is suitable for everyone from the age of 6 upwards and can be enjoyed by all nationalities, as the performance takes place without words. They are presented in the castle's open-air courtyard in all kinds of weather, and the entrance is through the Castle courtyard.

The production is produced by HamletScenen in collaboration with Kronborg Castle. In addition to Rye, the production team includes Jacques S. Matthiessen (concept and production), Rolf Søborg Hansen (set design and puppets), and Fredrik Lundin (music).

Running from June 29–July 21, Romeo and Juliet will play at 1300 hours (1 p.m.) every day except Fridays. Advance sales, reservations, and group sales are available by telephone at +45 7020 2096, and tickets for performances on the day will be sold at Kronborg Castle ticket office.
