Shakespeare's Globe

Tours Win Award As Well As Audiences

Shakespeare's Globe has been awarded the Renee Stepham Award for Best Presentation of Touring Theatre at the Theatre Awards UK 2011.

Over the past five years, under the leadership of artistic director Dominic Dromgoole, the Globe has expanded its work to reach audiences beyond its Bankside home, nationally and internationally. This month the Globe is taking its small-scale production of The Comedy of Errors to Santa Monica and Santa Barbara in California, and next year it will present two large-scale UK tours of Anne Boleyn and Henry V prior to the main theatre season at the Globe.

The Globe's small-scale tours were introduced in 2007 with a production of Romeo and Juliet. Since then, the Globe has presented 1,115 performances at 251 venues across the UK and Europe. “The Globe's visits have become the cultural highlight of this rural community, bringing accessible world-class theatre to a region that has limited access to it,” a Globe release quotes Chrys Salt, artistic director at the Bakehouse, Dumfries, which has welcomed the Globe's tours for four years. “They inspire and entertain capacity audiences of all ages, setting them up for life-time engagement with Shakespeare.”

Middle and large-scale productions have included Love's Labour's Lost, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Liberty by Glyn Maxwell. In Spring 2012, Anne Boleyn, winner of the 2011 Whatsonstage Award for Best New Play, will visit Cambridge, Birmingham, Blackpool, Brighton, Truro, Darlington, Malvern, Bath, and Edinburgh in partnership with English Touring Theatre. The Globe's new production of Henry V will visit Liverpool, Cardiff, Oxford, Bath, Cambridge, and Salisbury before opening the Globe's 2012 season as the final show in the Globe to Globe 2012 Festival.
