Theater-TV Partnership Promotes Discussions

Chesapeake Shakespaere Company logoChesapeake Shakespeare Company (CSC) in Ellicott City, Md., and Maryland Public Television (MPT) were one of 10 partnership organizations selected to participate in the Shakespeare Uncovered National Community Outreach Initiative. This program partners public media stations with Shakespeare festivals and theater companies across the country to raise awareness of the Shakespeare Uncovered series currently running on PBS, to foster enthusiasm for Shakespeare's work at the local level, and to engage and build new audiences for public media and the performing arts in creative and innovative ways.

Shakespeare Uncovered is a six-episode series running Friday nights to Feb. 8 (check local listings) that combines history, biography, iconic performances, new analysis, and the personal passions of its celebrated hosts—Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Irons, Derek Jacobi, Trevor Nunn, Joely Richardson, and David Tennant—to tell the “stories behind the stories” of some of Shakespeare's greatest plays.

In conjunction with this partnership, MPT and CSC have been hosting free Shakespeare Roundtable Discussions throughout the region for the general public. The discussions are led by Chesapeake Shakespeare Company artistic staff and will show excerpts of the PBS series while giving the public an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about some of Shakespeare's greatest works.

The last discussion is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m. in the Annapolis Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase Street, Annapolis. This discussion, based on Hamlet and The Tempest, will be moderated by CSC Founding Artistic Director Ian Gallanar.

The roundtable discussion is free to the public, and refreshments and beverages will be available for cash at all locations. RSVP to [email protected] or 410-313-8874 if you wish to attend.
