Atlanta Shakespeare Company/American Shakespeare Tavern

Tragedies, Repertories Mark 13-Play Season

The New American Shakespeare Tavern logoIn a season of repertories, the Atlanta Shakespeare Company at the New American Shakespeare Tavern has scheduled 13 plays for its 2013–2014 season, with all but one of those a Shakespeare composition.

Highlighting the lineup is the company's ongoing "Shakespeare Evolutions" series, in which ASC intends to produce every Shakespeare play in each genre: comedy, tragedy, and history. For this season, the Tavern will mount six plays in The Tragedies series: Troilus and Cressida in September, Othello in October, King Lear in November, Timon of Athens in January, Macbeth in April, and Antony and Cleopatra in June.

Romeo and Juliet is on the schedule, too, but the company did its Evolutionary Series production of that play this past year when it featured two teen actors in the lead roles. For the upcoming season, Romeo and Juliet will be part of the Romance Repertory, which will also include Much Ado About Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew, running through February and March.

The Comedy of Errors is scheduled for May. The one non-Shakespeare production will be Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol in December.

The Taming of the Shrew will actually start its run in January in repertory with Timon of Athens before extending into the Romance Repertory. Troilus and Cressida will run in repertory with Twelfth Night in September, with both shows directed by Drew Reeves, who is also directing Timon of Athens. Artistic Director and Founder Jeff Watkins is directing The Taming of the Shrew as well as Antony and Cleopatra. The other directors are Laura Cole for Othello, J. Tony Brown for King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, and A Christmas Carol, Mat Felten for Romeo and Juliet, Troy Willis for Macbeth, and Andrew Houchins for The Comedy of Errors.

Ticket prices range from $15 to $36 plus tax. To order tickets or inquire about The Shakespeare Club Program and Flex Pass, call The Tavern Box Office at 404-874-5299 or e-mail at [email protected] or visit the website at www.shakespearetavern.com.
